About

EcoIndex.fr is an online service initially designed by Frédéric Bordage (GreenIT.fr) and produced by Gwenael Chailleu and Thomas Samain (Nxtweb). Subsequently, many volunteer contributors participated in the developments and improvements of the online service. This collective project, open to all, is hosted on the Green IT collective repositories here: https://github.com/cnumr/EcoIndex and https://github.com/cnumr/EcoIndex_python

Hosting by Hodi

This site is hosted by Hodi, a French hosting provider whose infrastructure in France limits its environmental impacts on two levels:

  1. the eco-responsible datacenters that house it;
  2. and the way the host optimizes the use of its servers.

Eco-responsible IT centres

Our IT centres prioritize refurbished hardware (from reuse rather than manufacturing new equipment), electricity produced from low-impact renewable primary energy (wind, photovoltaic, hydro), and a PUE target below 1.3 at full capacity thanks to natural cooling (free cooling) to optimize energy efficiency.

Responsible operations

On the operations side, half of the microprocessors (CPUs) are automatically shut down at night when load allows, which reduces the nominal electricity consumption of the infrastructure, and malicious bot traffic — nearly 30% of global web traffic — is blocked by default: fewer useless requests and less electricity wasted.

EcoIndex integrated by default

Hodi goes further by integrating EcoIndex measurement by default on its customers’ sites. Because the environmental footprint of a website does not depend only on the host: how it is designed and used matters just as much. The goal is to help everyone quantify, understand, and reduce their impacts.

For responsible digital development in Africa

Beyond France, Hodi is committed to more responsible digital development in Africa by offering African companies the same kind of responsible infrastructure at continental scale.
